Laborers' Local 81 was chartered January 2, 1918, by International Hod Carriers' Building and Common Laborers' Union of America, presently known as LiUNA! or Laborers International Union of North America. We have over 1,300 dedicated and hard-working members in the construction industry. Construction Craft Laborers from Laborers' Local 81 perform work on area highways, utilities, commercial building construction, residential building construction, tunnel construction, industrial maintenance, and industrial new construction. We place concrete for highways, airports, and building construction. Our members work at steel mills, power plants, and most industrial sites in our area performing all types of maintenance including railroad track repairs, furnace repairs, and underground utility repairs. We install and repair sewers, water, and natural gas lines. We perform roadwork and place asphalt. Our flaggers are out on the highways throughout our jurisdiction, which includes Lake County East of Cline Avenue and the counties of Porter, La Porte, and Starke. Our members wake up early, work late through the night, and lace their boots up every day to help build Northwest Indiana. We have been an important part of the development of our local communities and industrial sites for over 100 years and we will continue to be in the future.
